When it comes to caring for children with neurological and behavioral disorders, the old saying is often true: "It takes a village."
Or, more precisely, it takes multiple medical professionals to care for patients that suffer from complex and interrelated neurological and behavioral conditions. In fact, it's widely acknowledged among the medical community that collaborating to treat these special patients enhances their care and improves their outcome.
At Phoenix Children's Hospital, funding awarded in 1993 enabled the divisions of neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, and psychology to come together in one such collaboration: the Children's Neuroscience Institute.
Today, the Hospital's Children's Neuroscience Institute, under the leadership of Director P. David Adelson, MD, FACS, FAAP, enjoys the dominant case volume in pediatric neurosciences of any hospital in the market.
Specialized medical equipment, pediatric patient rooms, and pediatric specialists — in addition to the hospital's family-centered focus – make the Center uniquely qualified to treat pediatric patients.
The program is looking toward the future by placing a large emphasis on teaching and research activities. All of the divisions within the Center participate in training Phoenix Children's Hospital's pediatric residents. In addition, the Center hosts residents from the University of Arizona's adult Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry departments. The Center sponsors a noon lecture on neurosciences every third Wednesday of the month and hosts an annual rehabilitation conference in the fall.
Beyond training the doctors of tomorrow, the Center also seeks cures for tomorrow with its clinical research program.
The teaching and research activities round out what has become a comprehensive, integrated, and groundbreaking neuroscience program at Phoenix Children's Hospital.
